Chapter Twelve

Recovery

MY DAYS in the hospital were an assortment of pains and frustrations. I was frustrated because I was in pain and because I couldn’t do things for myself. And I was frustrated because when I tried to do things for myself, I ended up hurting myself more than anything else, which only produced more pain and more frustration.

The pain was worse because they were weaning me off the medications that had kept it in check, which was making me suffer—at least that’s the way I saw it. I’m sure they had a different interpretation of the whole thing, but I didn’t care about what they thought. I was in too much discomfort to care what anyone else thought.

If you’ve ever been in a hospital, you know it is next to impossible to get any rest while you’re there. There is always something happening, somebody moving in and out of the room, some announcement coming over the loudspeaker, somebody dropping something out in the hallway, or a roommate snoring or moaning all night long.

Between the noise at night and the lower dose of pain meds, which had apparently helped me sleep in the early days there, I was having a hard time sleeping. So on top of everything else, I was dealing with being overtired. Yeah, my life was just great right then.

I knew I was feeling sorry for myself, but I thought I’d earned the right to feel a little self-pity. I had been through hell, and something told me that I had a whole lot of hell still to go before I was finished with it.

But life found a fresh hell to throw at me.

Since my time was one “nothing special” day after another “nothing special” day, I had no way to tell one from another. I couldn’t tell what day it was, nor could I tell you how long I’d been in the hospital.

I was surprised one morning when Ben, my father, and Melinda all arrived at the same time. It appeared that the peace Ben and my dad had made was still holding up well, because they were both in the same room at the same time and were being more than cordial to each other.

They’d obviously all come to the hospital together that morning, which made me wonder what they were up to. I was sitting in the chair beside the bed for a change of scenery, which was my big venture so far that day. At least I had the strength to sit up on my own now, which I suppose was a step in the right direction.

“Morning, Adam,” my dad greeted me with a smile.

“Oh God, now what?” I asked in a grumpy mood, which was my perpetual state now, mostly from lack of proper rest.

“We’ve got good news,” he told me, but for some reason, I wasn’t buying it. “You’re going home.”

“Home, New York?” I asked, finally perking up a little bit. “Please, I want to go home. Get me out of this hellhole and take me home.
